Co-Curricular News

Rostrevor teams were greeted with very pleasant playing conditions on Saturday morning as all of the various summer sporting competitions are now in full swing.

For those of you who have been seeking a full term's fixture of games, please note that this is still a work in progress.  The SAAS competition has a new director and he is working hard to get his head around fixtures, therefore I ask that you continue to have patience with him.

1st XI Cricket

Rostrevor 123 all out in 40 overs (Kyle Brazell 54, Dylan Fitzsimons 19, Harrison Rahaley 15)
lost to Scotch College 7/123 in 41 overs (Sam Rahaley 2/17, Kyle Brazell 2/19, Riley Slack 1/18)

After winning the toss and batting, we made a fantastic start where Dylan Fitzsimons and newly appointed opening batsman Kyle Brazell put on 48 for the first wicket and did the job asked of them, although neither of the boys went on to score 75+ which is what you need when making a start. Harrison Rahaley and Brazell took the score to 1/77 and from there the wheels really fell off, due to some inexplicably poor shot selection from senior players in particular. We then lost 9/46, which is not good enough in any form of cricket. Credit to the Scotch bowlers as they bowled a very disciplined line and length but we really let ourselves down when it really mattered, which makes this all the more disappointing. Credit must go to Kyle Brazell who batted beautifully and showed great maturity for a Year 10 batsman.

In reply, our bowlers toiled hard without a lot of reward at the start. Joel Size bowled well and beat the bat a number of times. He was well supported by Brazell whose off-spin yielded 2 quick wickets at the start of his spell. Riley Slack, in his debut game, claimed a wicket with his first ball in 1st XI Cricket with a brilliant off-cutter to hit the top of off stump. His job was made difficult by bowling uphill into the wind, but it was a very promising effort with the ball in his first game. Sam Rahaley has impressed in training with his off-spin and he was rewarded with 2/17 off his 5 overs.

Again, our batting failed to meet the standards we expect of ourselves and the decision-making process to hit the ball in the air as we do must be addressed quickly. We will put our heads down, train hard and look forward to making amends v St Michael's.

A big thank you to the Rostrevor parents and our principal, Mr Messer, who made the trip to Scotch to support the boys. It is much appreciated.

Open Swimming

The 7-12 swim team competed in their first meet for the year scoring 202 points and finishing 3rd out of 4 teams competing on the night. A number of new swimmers impressed and the team was well led by Year 12s Brandon Luna and Lawson Nitschke. Special mention must go to new swimmer Thomas Carson who swam well in all events, especially the Under 14 freestyle with a time of 29.90 despite having had immunization injections that morning and Thomas believing he was not at his best. In order to become more competitive, the U14 team requires more swimmers as the team needed to forfeit relays. Well done to the lads who swam up an age group. Swim coach Mr O'Brien was quoted this week in the swim bulletin adapting Tom Blackledge's motto "The six W's: Work will win when whining won't"

In other Co-curricular News:

  • 10A cricketer Cameron Taheny impressed with both bat and ball against St Peter's in their 2 day game against St Peter's claiming 5 wickets for only 25 runs and then in the 2nd innings scored an impressive 63 runs out of a total of 133.

  • 2nd XI cricketer Angus Honner scored an impressive 63no against Pulteney and was ably supported by Mitch Warren who scored a handy 32 runs and finished with the figures of 3/20, helping their side claim victory.

If your son, be he a current or past scholar, has made any significant achievement in an activity outside of the College, please pass this on to me via email to jfischer@rostrevor.sa.edu.au or by phone, so that I can include his achievements in the weekly newsletter.
