2000 Young Australian of the Year Awards

Julian Mazzone

The Rostrevor Old Collegians' take pride in acknowledging the achievements of Julian Mazzone ('93) one of 3 finalists in the 2000 Young Australian of the Year Award as a Small Business Owner.

Julian is the Managing Director of Austronic Services. a business he founded in 1996. Austronic Services is a security and communications business employing 13 people. It offers domestic and commercial security systems, access control, camera surveillance. fire detection and a range of communication aspects such as telephone systems, data and voice networks and internal and external PA systems.

Julian's interest in electronics was supported by his study of Electronics as an Open Access subject in Year 12. He also speaks warmly of the support and nurturing offered by Technology Studies Coordinator, Mr. Michael Byrne, in the weekly Tech Club. Julian states that it was with Michael's support that his enjoyment of and passion for electronics was harnessed.

On leaving school, Julian took up an apprenticeship with S.A. Electronics but after 12 months decided to go back to study for his Associate Diploma of Electronics. Such was Julian's aptitude for his chosen career that it was not long before security company MSS approached him and he was sub contracted by them to install security systems. In 1995 he registered the name Austronic Services and in 1996 he was in business for himself employing as his first apprentice old scholar Steven Andriolo.

In only four years Julian has established Austronic Services as one of Adelaide's leading security and communication companies. His entrepreneurial skills, creativity and business acumen have seen his company win some outstanding contracts. Austronic Services is the provider of security and telecommunications systems to the Holdfast Shores Development Project and has provided services to the Adelaide Youth Courts and the Magistrate Courts.

Of interest is Julian's pride in employing four old scholars, Frank Pergoleto ['93), Damian Balasso ('93), Hayden Dowd ('97) and Ian Bryant ('88). Julian's enterprise extends further with his other business interest, Silva Imports, which imports Japanese high-performance vehicles. He is now a compliance holder for these vehicles and this business is growing quickly. His interest in cars even extends to the track. He and fellow driver Paul Mitolo competed at Bathurst this year in the Three-Hour Showroom Showdown, an endurance race of 70 laps for high performance vehicles. Julian drives a Mazda RX7SP and will be competing in the Clipsal 500 (Adelaide 500) next year. Julian's work has taken him to trade Ex Fairs in Singapore, Germany, Italy and Japan.

Julian, one of the three finalists in the S.A Young Australian of the Year Award.

It is reassuring to hear him speak highly of Rostrevor staff in particular Mr. Michael Byrne, "he encouraged and inspired my interest in electronics and opened up my career path" and Mr. John Ordon, "a great motivator who I related to really well". Julian has sustained friendships with old scholars Harry John ('92) John Russo ('93), Frank Di Fede ('93) and Joe Spagnoletti ('93).

At 23 years of age Julian's achievements are outstanding and he is a wonderful role model to the 1999 graduates.

The Rostrevor Old Collegians' congratulate him on his success and watch with interest the outcome of the Young Australian of the Year SA Final indeed the career of a young man who is already an inspiration to so many.
