Mr Michael Vickery
Head of Gurr House, Acting Head of Co-Curricular

Last weekend really challenged the depths of our teams as we were hit by a large amount of player unavailability, particularly in our football program. We have a significant number of players who have sustained injuries and we wish them a speedy and full recovery, combined with four boys who were playing in State football commitments, as well as the complexity of it being an exeat weekend. I would like to express my appreciation to the coaches who had to work double time behind the scenes to ensure they hit the field with full teams. I would also like to thank those boys who helped us to cover the shortages by playing up or playing twice!

The commitment of our boys is also reflected in the number of unavailable players who still arrived at their games to assist running water and supporting their mates. Well done to all!

While I do not anticipate another weekend as complex as we have just experienced, it did highlight the need for students to ensure they are communicating effectively with their coaches regarding their availability.

This weekend has Rostrevor teams playing mostly away fixtures. All fixture information and maps for away games are posted at on the College website by Wednesday evening, and boys are provided with additional information from their coaches by email.

A very commanding first half meant we were 5-0 up. The boys' movement and passing was excellent and they consistently found a way to create chances and were clinical when closing in on goal. A pleasing way to bounce back from last week.

The Red 'n' Black started the evening needing to win - preferably by a big margin - if they were to have an eye on the pointy end of the year. St. Paul's, who had managed a 4 4 draw with us last season in controversial circumstances   would be tough, hard tackling side and we needed to keep our feet and play our game to succeed.

Rossi found the breakthrough after 12 minutes, Lachlan Barr picking out Antony Piscioneri with a clever chip over the defence that was put back across goal by the Year 10 debutant for Alessio Rapetti to tap in. Rostrevor knew just a draw might not be enough over a long season and new coach Marc Marino urged his side to push for more goals from the touchline.

The lead was doubled after 20 minutes with a penalty awarded for handled ball after an innocuous cross from Tyson Linsenmeier rebounded awkwardly. Mark Ulaj, now one of the senior players, slotting home calmly from 12 yards. The rest of the first half was made up of Rostrevor attacks but few chances, whilst St. Paul's relied on the long ball over the top, and at this level, rarely caught out a well organised defence led by skipper Michael Sosa and Peter Toscano.

The second half became scrappy as both teams made changes across the pitch, and, as darkness and the rain descended, several chances were wasted by both sets of forwards. St. Paul's caused a late scare by hitting the frame from 25 yards, which fortunately cannoned off to a player in red and black. A reasonable start to the 2017 season.

Round 3 saw us venture to the home ground of St Peter's in near perfect conditions. We went into the game with a number of changes from the previous week, with state duties, exeat weekend and injuries taking effect. After a disappointing effort against PAC the previous week, we were looking to see how the group would respond.

Similar to the previous week's game, in the first half we had as much ball as the opposition but our inability to execute our skills under pressure resulted in continual turn overs. Again, the opposition often capitalised on our ball movement errors allowing them to go into the half-time break with a good 35 point lead.

In the 2nd half we made a conscious effort to provide more pressure at the contest and slow our ball movement down. In our efforts to play attractive football, we were quite simply trying to play too fast for our capabilities in the first half of the game. Slowing our ball movement down had immediate effect as we dominated possession and field position for the 3rd quarter, kicking six straight goals and getting ourselves right back into the game.

The last quarter was an even contest where both teams had minutes of momentum, with St Peter's just doing enough to get across the line to record a 9 point win. Our effort and game style in the 2nd half was more pleasing, getting somewhere to the level we are looking to consistently produce.

Year 10 Anzac Lochowiak in his first game of 1st XVIII football for the College was outstanding up forward, winning numerous 1-on-1 contests and finishing his work with 7 goals. Down back, Mitchell Gum continued his impressive start to the season with another strong performance in defence. The midfield group of Luke Valente, Jacob Kennerley, Dan Fraser, Murphy Short and Mihail Lochowiak lifted the team in the 2nd half. Jackson Sutcliffe moved into the ruck in the 2nd half and showed great promise with his tap work and strong marking around the ground.

Congratulation to Anzac Lochowiak (Yr. 10), Jeffrey Simon (Yr. 10) and Tom Matsis (Yr. 11) on their first games of 1st XVIII football for the College.
