Umpires

Umpires are hard to find. It takes a special person to be willing to take the field and assume responsibility for a game at any level. As a community, we take out sport very seriously and this puts enormous pressure on those who officiate our games. It is a role that is often highly criticised but like everyone else on the field our umpires are human. They make mistakes, are constantly learning and gaining experience each week. We are fortunate to have several students, members of staff and old scholars who step up as umpires each week and ensure that our home fixtures for basketball, soccer and football can go ahead. It is important as a College that we appreciate and support their progression as umpires and their input into our successful co-curricular program. Next game, don't forget to thank them, and if you have any feedback that can support them to improve, please channel this through me in the first instance.

Week 6 provided plenty of sporting highlights for Rostrevor, with some strong team and individual performances. Standout moments included:

  • 9A Football continuing their winning streak with a 117 point win over Saints.

  • Double hat trick to Jake Tatarelli who scored 6 goals in the 10A Soccer team's 11-3 demolition of Pembroke.

  • Cameron Ball taking a screamer in his best on ground performance against SHC in the 1stXVIII.

Some team reports:

8A Soccer 0 def by Concordia College 5

Full credit to the players who were competing against a mix of Year 9 and Year 8 students. They battled and fought all game and were unfortunate not to have got on the scoresheet. I had a few comments from members of the crowd about the spirit and ability of the players in the game and everyone said it was an excellent game to watch and the score line did not truly reflect the performance of both teams.

9B Soccer 4 def Blackfriars 3

Blackfriars were a strong outfit and opened the scoring in the first 5 minutes with a miscommunication error between defence and keeper. However, the goal flicked a switch in the boys and Thomas Tunno then hit a first half hat trick with a show of strength and pace, half time ended 3-1. The second half began with Blackfriars scoring from a corner to scramble the ball in. Again, the boys lifted with Paech and Formato combining for a critical and elegant cross and heading to make the score 4-2, with 6 minutes to go Blackfriars scored again and provided a thrilling finish but the boys were strong and ended the game with a 4-3 win.

3XI Soccer 6 def Trinity College 3

The 3rd XIs started strong this week with only 10 players at kick off. The team pushed forward and after a few early chances were able to capitalise. The match was well played out with a couple of slow points backed up by great ball movement and team work.

After the break, the group took off from where they finished continuing to press forward. This opportunity was rewarded with two quick goals, and then two penalties awarded to the Rostrevor offense. The second was successful and the boys were 5-3 up. With only a few minutes left, the boys felt confident so worked as a team to push forward. After winning a corner, Adrian Beltrame was able to score from outside the box, finishing with their first win of the season 6-3.

8A Football 9-3-57 def Trinity 6-2-38

The game proved that what has been covered at training over the past few weeks is finally gelling - it was a good confidence booster for the whole team.

The game was played with good system, Luca Stepic played a great game at Centre Half Forward as the tall forward we channelled attack through. He benefited from the great work inside and around the contested ball by Tyson Walls, Harry Wright and Alastair Lord. Eric Luppino consistently got his hand first to the ball at throw-ups to feed the hungry mid-field hoards.

The outstanding performer of the match however was Harry Brasher what a game! Harry clutched a number of contested marks as the focal forward an absolute tower of strength. He ended up kicking 5 goals in a close to best on ground performance. Resolute defence from the likes of Lachlan Mahar, Thomas Snowball and the tireless and disciplined Tom Carson helped repel numerous attacks. Ollie Piro once again worked tirelessly as he has done all year with a fearless attack on the ball and body.

Overall it was a great team performance by all players and the "Choomalaka" was sung with much "gusto" for the first time in 2017!

9A Football  19-19-133 def SPSC 2-4-16

A terrific contribution from the entire 20. The pleasing aspects amongst many was the tackling, the stoppage work, the quick hands and release and the delivery to leading forwards Jake Slivak and Matt Dnistriansky who were very clean overhead.

A combined 10 goals from our two key forwards was reward for effort from our midfield of Captains Xavier Tranfa and Elliott Murada whilst ruckmen Ned Carey and Samuel Rahaley once again dominated the air and followed up with strong 2nd and 3rd efforts at ground level.

Very little got past the half back line of Shute, Crabtree and Deng who were resolute but attacking when the opportunity arose with their pinpoint kicking skills.

The tackling of our smalls, specifically Michael and Adam Greenwood, Christy Saji, Ben Browne, Raheem Betts and Lewis Matsis stood out. Betts and Browne displayed all their skills and evasiveness time and again in very tight situations and the Greenwood brothers were tough and hard all match.

1XVIII Football 7-13-55 def by Sacred Heart 10-9-69

Round 5 saw us against our arch rival in Sacred Heart at home. Rostrevor 1st XVIII haven't been successful in beating SHC for a long period now but our form had been building through the season and we went into this game with confidence that we could get the win. The game was played in perfect conditions which encouraged the free-flowing football both teams desired to play.

We started well and had a strong first half of football. Our pressure around the contest and our ball movement coming out of defence was terrific, areas that we have been working on over recent weeks. We controlled possession and had 9 more inside 50s for the half, but we still struggled to find goal kickers which has been an issue for us thus far this season. When opportunities presented themselves in front of goal we didn't take them, so we went into the half time break with 5 goals 7 behinds and a lead of 21 points.

We knew going into the break that we were playing ok but we had still kept the opposition in the game on the scoreboard. We had a poor 3rd quarter. The game changed around in a complete opposite as we became the ones who were 2nd to the ball and became very reactive. Our lack of winning the ball and pressure around the contest, combined with poor defensive accountability, allowed the opposition to kick 6 goals for the quarter without us troubling the scoreboard.

We had to re-group at and go into the last quarter facing a 15-point margin. We still believed that if we got back to playing the game we did in the first half, we were still a strong show at winning the contest. Our last quarter was a better effort. We certainly had our opportunities but again didn't finish in front of goal, kicking 2 goals 5 behinds for the quarter, finishing the game 14 points in arrears.

Having more inside 50s and scoring shots in the match than the opposition certainly shows we had our chances and we are feeling very disappointed at letting this great opportunity slip. We can be positive that most of the game we are starting to play to a level we are trying to achieve but we need to be able to keep intensity and concentration for a full game. Game consistency has been an issue for us thus far this season so this game provides another harsh lesson towards improving this area.

We started Cam Ball up forward who provided us a strong target early before having to shift him down back when we were under pressure. He continues his great form and showcased his ability to  play at both ends of the ground. Mitchell Gum also continued his strong form in defence and later up forward in the game. Jack Draper now getting some game continuity after a run of injuries, played a strong game in defence with his attack on the ball a feature. Luke Valente continues to develop his inside game with good movements through the midfield, and Ben Jarvis had moments up forward finishing with 3 goals.

We now take a break for a week and return for our first "Knock out" game v Immanuel. Looking forward to seeing a positive response from the group.
