Principal's News - 17 February 2023

This weekend our co-curricular program is back in full swing with a variety of sports being played and enjoyed by students. Our Co-Curricular Program relies heavily on the support of families and volunteers and we appreciate the large number of parents, old scholars and friends who volunteer their time to assist with our programs. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, either to support with co-curricular, or with other aspects of College life, you are encouraged to register via the links on our website.

2023 Dux Assembly

It was lovely to welcome back graduates from the Class of 2022 at this week’s Dux Assembly. Students achieving ATARs above 90, merit recipients and A+ grade recipients were acknowledged and celebrated by current students, staff, and friends of the College. Due to the outstanding results attained by this year level, there were many former students and families joining us in Purton Hall for the celebration.

To say our expectations were exceeded by the Class of 2022’s academic achievements would be an understatement. All students achieved their SACE, something that has been achieved every year since 2016. The students we recognise today represent 40% of the eligible cohort who achieved ATARs above 90. 21% achieved ATARs above 95 and 7.3% achieved ATARs above 99. This is an outstanding achievement and continues our tradition of strong academic excellence.

In an absolutely phenomenal accolade, three Governor’s commendations were awarded to Cameron Tunno, Ridheypreet Grover and Taylem Stubbs.

Last year’s Dux and 2022 Deputy Head Prefect, Cameron Tunno issued an emotive and captivating speech, encouraging current students to take responsibility for their own futures, and to “reach for the stars”. Cameron has been accepted into Medicine at Griffith University in Brisbane. Proxime Accessit, Ridheypreet Grover is also bound for Queensland this year, being accepted into Medicine at Griffith University at the Gold Coast.

We thank everyone who supported the students in their educational journey and especially affirm the Year 12 teachers who worked with the Class of 2022. We wish them all the best for their exciting next chapter as they venture beyond the Rostrevor gates.

Year 8 Camp

From Wednesday to Friday last week, our Year 8 students were on Camp at Hindmarsh Island. The first half of the program saw the boys try their hand at surfing, sailing and fishing whilst situated at a base camp. The other half of the program saw the boys engaging in kayaking whilst camping in tents and cooking their own meals on a Trangia stove. All students should be commended for the resilience they demonstrated and their willingness to participate in all activities on offer.

CO-CURRICULAR NEWS

U17 Joeys at the Antalya Youth Cup

Fabian Talladira (Year 12, pictured bottom right) has spent the week in Türkiye at the 2023 Antalya Youth Cup. He played a full game against Czechia which ended in a 0-0 draw, and played part of a game against Morocco where the Joeys came away with a 2-1 win. The Joeys lost the last game against Uzbekistan 1-2, but Fabian was awarded Man of the Match for the game! Outstanding achievement, Fabian!

National Futsal Championships

Year 12 student Eric Ciaramellano (top left) competed in the National Futsal Championships in Melbourne in January. Eric’s team – the SA U16s – made it all the way to the semi-finals before being knocked out by Queensland. Eric has been asked to trial for the Youth team. Well done, Eric!

First XI Cricket

The First XI team played their first match for the season on Saturday, sporting their new Centenary branded uniforms. While the match went to St. Michael’s College, we had standout players in Harvey Wilson who bowled 2/25, and Alex Pertl who ran 38 not out.

South Australian Cycling Championship

Eight Rostrevor students competed in the 2023 School Sports SA Cycling Championships on Tuesday this week. Samuel Haynes, Liam Underwood, Aidan Launer, Marco Aurelio Panichi, Zane Kidd, Ryan Underwood, Samuel Cree and Zachary Seret competed against 64 other students across four categories at Adelaide’s Victoria Park Racecourse.

Liam Underwood, Year 9, is congratulated on Rostrevor’s best result: 3rd in B grade. Liam’s brother Ryan Underwood, Year 7, also had a fantastic result considering being grouped with much older students in B grade. Marco Aurelio Panichi kept a strong pace throughout the day and will definitely be a student to watch out for in future events. Congratulations to all the students who participated on the day. Thank you to the parents, Mr Hunt and Mr Vlad who helped make the event possible.
