Winter Co-Curricular
The fixtures for the winter co-curricular season have been uploaded to the Rostrevor website at https://www.rostrevor.sa.edu.au/fixtures.html with most matches commencing on May 12.
Schools do not always play on their actual grounds; therefore, it is important to check where the match is being played. Maps are usually available by Wednesday of the upcoming weekend at the latest but I am reliant upon the opposing school to forward this information.

After a pre-season of over 6 weeks, which culminated in a good trial against Geelong Grammar, we had to wait another 3 weeks to compete again.

Rostrevor were drawn Sacred Heart in a round 1 home fixture and, with 7 boys making their debut in the 1st XVIII for the red and black, there were plenty of unknowns. The spirit shown early in the contest was good, but Sacred Heart were a bit more composed and were far more efficient when going forward against an inexperienced Rostrevor defence. At the first quarter break, the Rossie boys were down 5 goals to 1 and signs were ominous, despite a few highlights including a contender for 'almost' mark of the year by powerhouse forward Anzac Lochowiak.

We adjusted a few things at quarter time and gradually got back into the match as the backline settled into their roles, the midfield won more clearances and the forward entry was more efficient. Year 11 Cameron Taheny capitalised on the great work in the middle by Kennerley, Valente and Shute, finishing the half with 3 goals to his name and the deficit was back to within a goal.

The second half saw all of the Rostrevor boys contribute, playing their roles and adopting a team-first attitude as the lead changed several times.  With 6 minutes to go in the match, scores were locked at 12-10 apiece and a tense battle played out as both teams looked to just scramble a score.  Rostrevor managed to get a point with 30 seconds left on the clock as Lochowiak hit the post in what would have been his 5th for the day and held on for a tremendous win with Taheny scoring a goal after the siren to take his tally to 6.

A pleasing aspect of the match was the courageous manner in which the boys played out the game as they continued to run and take the game on throughout the contest, something which we will work on maintaining. Moving forward, the team will benefit from being cleaner at ground level, more consistently driving through the ball and improving our ability to utilise quick, accurate hand skills in congestion.

The next match is away against St Michael's and although the team will be without several players including the newly appointed Captain, Luke Valente because of the state under 18 program, we get back some from the SANFL under 16 Grand Final and the music trip.

• Congratulations to Luke Valente who was named Captain of the 1st XVIII for 2018
• Year 10 Ned Carey was named in the initial 2018 U16 AFL side that will compete later this term
  With 18 players unavailable for senior football selection, a number of Year 10 boys offered their services to play 2nd and 3rd XVIII football on the weekend and performed admirably.
