Principal’s News - 3 May 2024

Welcome back to Term 2 after what I hope was a relaxing and rejuvenating holiday break. Term 2 sees the commencement of the Winter Co-Curricular program with fixtures kicking off already this week. We look forward to seeing many parents, friends and supporters on the sidelines in the coming weeks, all of course proudly supporting the red and black!

We wish our music department all the very best as they head to Mt Gambier this weekend for Generations in Jazz. A big thank you to the Music Department for ensuring that Rostrevor’s budding musicians continue to be offered these wonderful opportunities.

Welcome to Rostrevor’s New Deputy Principal

It is my pleasure to welcome Mr Cameron Alexander to Rostrevor College this term as Deputy Principal. Mr Alexander replaces Mr Frank Ranaldo who has taken up the position of Deputy Principal at fellow EREA Colleges school, St Paul’s College for Terms 2 and 3 before he takes some well-deserved leave in Term 4.

Cameron comes to Rostrevor with many years of senior leadership experience across four EREA schools in three states. He is a passionate advocate for student wellbeing, firmly believing it is the cornerstone of academic achievement. He is committed to building strong relationships with staff, students and their families, and is looking forward to meeting the many wonderful members of our community this year.

Edmund Rice Day

Rostrevor is lucky to be part of the tight-knit community of Edmund Rice schools from across the world. The Edmund Rice Day Mass today, led by old Collegian Fr Anthony Beltrame ('09), was a time for us to celebrate what it means to be a College in the Edmund Rice tradition having access to a Liberating Education, based on a Gospel Spirituality, within an Inclusive Community committed to Justice and Solidarity. Today's Mass reminds us to strive to be people for others, uplifting and advocating for those in our community who need our support.

Old Boys’ Lunch

Almost 50 Old Boys from the Class of 1973 and before filled the Pavilion today, gathering to enjoy good food and good company overlooking the College's grounds. Some Old Collegians arrived early to participate in the Edmund Rice Day Mass. The Pavilion was filled with nostalgic stories as the Old Boys spent the afternoon catching up with mates and reminiscing about their time at Rostrevor. Thank you to guest speaker James Orchard ('87), Vice President of the South Australian Cricket Board who shared insider knowledge of the workings of SACA to eager ears. Thank you also to the Prefects who volunteered their time to ensure the event ran smoothly.

ANZAC Day

Eight Rostrevor Prefects attended the ANZAC Day dawn service at the Kensington Gardens RSL on Thursday last week to honour those who have served and sacrificed.

Over in Melbourne Old Collegian Colby Mercer (’23) was part of the catafalque party as a recently qualified Gunner in the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery.

Lest we forget.

Manchester City Football School Holiday Clinics

The Manchester City Football School Holiday Clinics were back again in the recent break, with children from across the wider community coming along to enjoy three days of soccer-focused learning in a fun and inclusive setting. Thank you to Coach Jamie Lee for once again facilitating this wonderful program.

SACE Exam Timetable

CO-CURRICULAR NEWS

2024 EREA Brisbane Soccer Tournament

In Week 11 of Term 1 three Rostrevor College soccer teams participated in the EREA Football Tournament held at St Josephs College, Nudgee in Brisbane. Blessed with sunny skies and incredible playing surfaces, our Year 8, Year 9/10, and Year 11 teams took to the pitches over three days competing against many Edmund Rice Australia schools from across the country.

Our teams were incredibly successful on the tour with our Year 8 team coming out on top of their division after winning all seven of their games, culminating in a Grand Final win against St Virgil’s College 5-2. Our Year 9/10 team had a similarly successful tour winning six of seven games and winning their Grand Final over fellow Adelaide school CBC 4-3 in a thrilling finale.

Our Year 11 team competed in the Open division and should hold their heads incredibly high with their efforts during the tour. The boys managed to make it through to qualifying final on the last day in an incredibly tough division against some very strong schools. Winning the qualifying final against St Dominics College 5-4, the boys couldn’t quite get the job done in the semi-final going down 2-3, narrowly missing out on making a Grand Final as well.

Congratulations to the boys for their efforts during the trip. They represented the College with pride. Thank you to our Soccer Coordinator Dan Mullen, and Senior Years Co-curricular Coordinator Sarah Catterwell for their organization and running of a hugely successful trip both on and off the field.

Under 18 National Basketball Championship

Congratulations to Year 11 student Noah Sampson who helped the South Australian U18 Men’s Basketball team win silver at the Under 18 National Basketball Championship at Brisbane over the holidays. The team made it to the grand final after beating tournament favourites Queensland South by over 20 points and last year’s silver medalists Vic Country in the semi-final, narrowly missing out on taking home the gold by only five points! It was a fantastic experience for the team who represented their state with pride and played with great sportsmanship.

State 4 x 100m Relay Medalist

Congratulations to Year 12 student Thomas Griffiths who was part of South Australia’s Under 20 4 x 100m relay team at the 2024 Chemist Warehouse Australian Athletics Championships during the school holidays. The team won a silver medal with a time of 41.39 seconds, breaking the state record previously set in 1995! Thomas is a year younger than his teammates and is eligible for selection in the U20 team again next year. This is his second state record in this event, with his Under 16 record still standing today.

Indian and Sri Lankan Cricket Tour

Year 11 students Alecs Zorzi and Jake Polkinghorne went on the trip of a lifetime over the holidays, partaking in a high-performance cricketing tour of India and Sri Lanka with the Cricket for All Academy. They played seven games against teams from various countries, playing their final game at the international test cricket ground P. Sara Oval in Colombo.
