Student Leadership Assembly

Congratulations to all students recognised at the Student Leadership Assembly today. We acknowledged the many forms of student leadership this year, including year level Identity, Arts and Sports Captains, Duggan House leaders and House Vice Captains. These students were awarded badges which they are encouraged to wear with pride on their blazers this year. We also awarded the Man of Camp awards, presented to those students who best displayed Rostrevor’s values of mateship, leadership and teamwork at this year’s Year 7 and 8 camps.

Year 10 Outdoor Education

The Year 10 Outdoor Education class ventured to Port Noarlunga on Tuesday for a day of practical learning. The day began with a short kayak on the Onkaparinga River and dune walk where they learned about local flora and fauna, including native bush foods used for thousands of years. The class have been developing their snorkelling skills in the College pool and were keen to explore the reef system off the jetty after lunch. The boys were fully immersed in their snorkelling experience with many keen to return to reef in the future.

Indigenous Storyteller Visit

Yesterday, a group of Rostrevor’s First Nations students and the Social Justice group welcomed Indigenous storyteller, educator and guide Trent Hill to the College to learn more about our campus environment and the culture of the local First Nations peoples. Trent discussed the native flora found at Rostrevor, including the 300-400-year-old ‘supermarket’ gum trees in the valley before taking students on an informative walk of the Kaurna Trail.

Agriculture Award

Each year, research company AgXtra runs a 'crop competition' for schools, primarily targeting Year 11 Agriculture students, where students make real industry-based decisions, such as selecting a wheat variety, sowing rate and fertiliser regime. These choices are based on analysing soil test results, long-term weather forecasts, and key information from the SA Crop Sowing Guide. AgXtra then sows each team's crops and harvests them later in the year.

The winner is determined by gross margin, which factors in income from wheat quality and final yield, as well as costs related to grain and fertiliser use. It was an extremely challenging year for crop production being one of the driest years in the last century, but the students showed creativity in seeking solutions to adapt. The results are now in, and out of 42 teams from schools across the state and even university teams, Rostrevor’s team comprising of Josh Holt, Alessio Quirino, Parth Singh, and Jay Vanderwerf secured first place overall—an incredible achievement!

CESA Student Leadership Day

A group of Year 12 leaders attended the inaugural CESA Student Leadership Program on Wednesday this week, focusing on building Catholic leadership within our school communities. The day’s focus was Head (Catholic leadership), Heart (Catholic leadership & me) and Hands (Faith in action), and offered opportunities to engage with other Catholic school communities through dialogue, storytelling, and reflection.

CO-CURRICULAR NEWS

Year 9/10 Knockout Cricket

Rostrevor’s Year 9/10 Knockout Cricket team put on a strong performance to secure a 45-run victory over St Paul’s College on Tuesday, successfully defending their total of 133 by bowling the opposition out for just 88 runs.

Batting first, Jacques Malan led the way with 56 off 42 balls, supported by Cooper Douglass (30 off 31) and Kingston Nankivell (19 off 11, SR 172.7). A steady contribution from Harrison Tink (10*) ensured Rostrevor posted a competitive total. In the bowling innings, Archah Parisi and Kingston Nankivell each claimed a wicket, playing a role in dismantling the opposition. The match was played in great spirits, with both teams competing hard but fairly.

SA Track and Field State Championships

Over the long weekend, Year 10 student Spencer De Lacy competed in eight events at the SA Track and Field State Championships, coming away with a swag of medals. Notably, he placed first in the Under 17 Long Jump with 6.81 meters. This jump ranks Spencer as first in Australia’s Under 17 rankings (by 27cm) and moves him into 16th in the world. He also achieved silver in the 400m, bronze in the Shot Put and 200m, fourth in the 110m Hurdles and Javelin, and fifth in the 100m final. He now looks forward to tackling the decathlon at the National Track and Field Championships at Perth later this term. Outstanding achievement, Spencer!

State Water Polo Team Selection

Luca will play for the 14&U team and Miles for the 16&U team, with both flying to Perth in April for the competition. The boys were selected based on their skill and ability over a period of trials. The Australian Youth Water Polo Championships is an opportunity for the pair to develop and display their skills as they play against the best players from across the country. Good luck, Miles and Luca!
