National Science Week Incursion
The theme for this year's National Science Week is 'Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All'. Junior School students have been celebrating the theme of the week by participating in an incursion where they were given the opportunity to explore connections between nature, science, technology, visual art and history.
They learned how colours were made and used throughout history before using some of these methods to create their own paint with flowers, spices and powdered vegetables. It was a fun and interactive experience, which also gave students a unique piece of art to take home afterwards. This experience allowed students to be imaginative and creative whilst learning the science and technological skills needed to create a masterpiece.
Year 9 Soup Making at Mary MacKillop College
Students from Egan House, together with several Barron House students, recently travelled to Mary MacKillop College as part of their Year 9 Rite Journey experience to prepare soup for Fred’s Van.
Working alongside MMC students, the boys prepared a range of nutritious soups that will be donated to Fred’s Van and served to people experiencing homelessness and hardship at Gawler Place in the Adelaide CBD. The experience allowed students to develop teamwork and communication skills, build new connections and, most importantly, put the values of service, empathy and social responsibility into action.
These opportunities would not be possible without the wonderful generosity of our Rostrevor students and families. A sincere thank you to everyone who donated vegetables and other ingredients. Your generosity enables our students to participate in meaningful service while directly supporting those in need within our community. Thank you also to Mary MacKillop College for once again welcoming our students and working alongside us to make a positive difference. A fantastic example of our young people putting compassion into action!
I thought that making the soup was a great experience to do with Mary MacKillop College. Merging with the girls and talking about school was a good refresher for the boys. My favourite part of the day was preparing the food, as all the groups were talking face-to-face about what we do and what is going on in our lives. Overall, it was a great experience for us as a group, as we got out of our comfort zones and talked to other people outside our friend groups.

Senior Jazz ABODA Competition
Rostrevor participated in the ABODA Band and Orchestra Festival at Westminster School last week, which is a state competition open for Senior School music groups. The competition requires ensembles to learn a set piece, usually by an Australian composer, and perform in front of adjudicators. This year, Senior Jazz competed in the Intermediate Division (Section 6) of the Big Band section, performing the set piece 'Hardly Groovin' by Jackson Mack and a ballad, 'In a Sentimental Mood' originally by Duke Ellington. The hard work, focus and determination of the students showed through in their performance, with Senior Jazz receiving Silver. A fantastic result!
Clontarf Foundation Visit
Last week, a mixture of our Third & Fourth XVIII Football teams hosted a friendly exhibition match against the Clontarf Indigenous Foundation on a wet and muddy Main Oval. The game between the two sides was played in great spirit and demonstrated some quality moments despite the tricky conditions.
The Clontarf Foundation runs school-based academies to improve education, life skills and employment prospects for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men. Using sport as an area of shared interest, the program helps students attend school, finish Year 12 and transition into meaningful jobs. We aim to continue building on this positive relationship with the Clontarf Foundation in the years to come.

CO-CURRICULAR NEWS
2026 Winter Intercol
As the weekend approaches, we look forward to seeing our students represent the red & black with pride at the Saturday fixtures of the 103rd Rostrevor College v Sacred Heart College Intercol. We look forward to welcoming the many students, families and community members from both Colleges for the final day of what has been a wonderful celebration of community and sport.
A special thanks goes to Rostrevor’s Co-Curricular staff who have worked closely with their counterparts at Sacred Heart to ensure we are ready to host and enjoy this fantastic annual event. The College wishes to acknowledge its members of the Independent Education Union who agreed to suspend their planned industrial action on Saturday, 22 August 2026 in recognition of the significance of Intercol to its students and the College community, and as a measure of goodwill in support of ongoing negotiations.
Continuing the 103-year-old legacy of the students who came before them is a privilege and an honour which students from both Colleges hold in high regard. The celebration of school spirit, respect for the legacy and upholding of the friendly rivalry between our two schools continues to something special to both Colleges.
Tune in to watch the Football on the final day of the 2026 Winter Intercol tomorrow HERE.
First XI Soccer Intercol v Sacred Heart College
Congratulations to the First XI Soccer team who won in convincing fashion at the 2026 Intercol match against Sacred Heart College. Elijah Weeks scored with his first touch, setting a record for the fastest ever goal scored at an Intercol match, giving Rostrevor the lead after just 20 seconds. Hearts scored a stunning equaliser mid-way through the first half, but then Rostrevor took charge. A quickly worked corner saw Marcus Caporaso convert to put the red and black back into the lead. Christian Tassotti and Elijah Weeks added two more before the break to give Rostrevor a 4-1 Half-time lead.
Rostrevor continued to dominate after the break but good work from the Hearts keeper prevented the scoreline from getting out of hand. Marcus Caporaso added another and Paolo Matto converted one right at the end to give Rostrevor a 6-1 win.
First V Basketball Intercol v Sacred Heart College
Congratulations to the First V Basketball team for securing a strong victory over Sacred Heart College last night, with the final score reading RC 62 - SHC 44. The game proved electric and had a great atmosphere in a packed-out stadium at The Lights Community and Sports Centre. SHC got the jump early to lead 12-2 at the start, but after a time-out to reset, Rostrevor started a small come back only being down five points at the break. A strong second quarter saw Rostrevor outscore SHC 24-9 and take a 10-point lead at the end of the first half.
The momentum continued for the rest of the game with the lead stretching out to a game high of 20 points before the final siren. A special mention to Intercol Medallist Dylan Lomman who finished with 23 points and Vice Captain George Kambouris who finished with 12 points. History was also made last night with Rostrevor winning back-to-back First V Intercol matches for the first time in the 103-year history of the competition. Across the day, the Open Bs also played and just fell short with a 49-55 loss, whilst the Middle A team capped off a with a 53-44 win!
Chess Intercol v Sacred Heart College
Well done to Rostrevor’s Chess team who won their Intercol competition last night for the third consecutive year! It was another exciting and challenging competition, and our players showed great concentration, teamwork and determination.
The competition was played in the Swiss system, with three rounds. The pairings for the first round were determined randomly, while the following rounds were based on the players’ scores. This meant that as the competition progressed, our strongest players had to face some of the strongest opponents from the Sacred Heart College team.
The team performed exceptionally well, finishing with an impressive 26.5 points out of a possible 30. This was a fantastic team result and a clear reflection of the hard work and preparation of all our players. A special mention goes to Max Gouletsas who was awarded the Intercol medal as the best player in Rostrevor’s team. We were also very excited to welcome Year 11 Alex Horlin-Smith as the newest member of the team, who joined us as a state champion and made valuable contributions towards the win. Congratulations to the entire team on this fantastic achievement.
Table Tennis
All Rostrevor's Middle & Senior Table Tennis players had fun as they developed their skills throughout this year's season. Coming up against some tough competition, they were persistent and never dropped their heads. From a group of kids learning to play a new sport, the Middle team was open minded and quick to learn the rules, always asking questions and developing their teamwork skills in doubles. The Middles had some dominant wins against some big schools, beating St Peter's College 18-2, and besting both St Paul's College and Christian Brothers College. The Seniors also saw success against St Peter's and barely scraped a 9-8 victory against St John's that was decided by the last set of the night.
There were standout performances across both the Middles and Seniors, notably Fred Davies who had plenty of wins early in the season, and Daniel Gustaffson who started in the B team but worked his way up to win games as A1. Overall, anyone who played Table Tennis in 2026 should be commended for their commitment, resilience, competitiveness and curiosity.
