Year 4 Zoo Snooze

Our Year 4 students had an unforgettable adventure during their overnight ‘Zoo Snooze’ camp at the Adelaide Zoo. Each class enjoyed exploring the animals, going on a night walk, playing games, and completing activity booklets, all topped off with a BBQ and pasta dinner. It was a fun-filled experience that brought learning to life!

Loreto College Pink & Green Day

In early 2024, the Rostrevor and Loreto communities mourned the loss of much-loved Year 7 Loreto College student, Ava Lynch, who passed away after a short battle with cancer. Ava was well known within our community as the younger sister of Charles (’21) and Harrison (’23), and the daughter of Christina and Darren Lynch—Darren also serving as a current member of the School Advisory Council.

Last Friday, our Rostrevor Prefects visited Loreto College to take part in their annual Pink and Green Day—a special fundraiser renamed in honour of Ava’s favourite colours. The afternoon began with a whole-school assembly, where Rostrevor and Loreto Prefects entered the gym together, proudly wearing and celebrating their green and pink costumes. This was followed by a friendly netball match between the Rostrevor Prefects and the Loreto Student Executives, along with a sausage sizzle, all in support of RUN DIPG—an organisation dedicated to improving outcomes for children diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), also known as brainstem cancer.

Karrawirra Parri River Excursion

The Year 10 Geography class and Stage 2 Aboriginal Studies class joined for an engaging river walk experience on Tuesday this week. Karrawirra Parri, or Red Gum forest river, also named Torrens River was explored in a welcome break to the current cold and wet winter weather. The Karrawirra Parri Reconciliation Walk uses QR codes on posts along the route to link to YouTube clips featuring Aboriginal Elders discussing the history of Adelaide’s important river. The boys then visited the Torrens Weir (Number 1) in the Adelaide Parklands to evaluate its positive and negative impacts on the environment.

“Our Geography excursion on Tuesday was a great experience and I enjoyed my afternoon. Our class got to learn about the Aboriginal people's connection to the land by physically going out on a walk and interacting with several signposts with information about the land's history. I learned a lot on this excursion and had a great time.”—Owen Tallis (Year 10)

Year 7 Charter Ambassador Program

On Tuesday this week, the Year 7 Portfolio Captains and other Year 7 leaders participated in a Charter Ambassador excursion to Parliament House. As part of the experience, we toured key areas of the building, including the House of Assembly and the Legislative Council, gaining insight into how our state government operates.

One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity to enter the House of Assembly chamber, where we shared their ideas on ways to improve our daily school life socially, physically, and academically. It was an inspiring day of leadership, learning and student voice in action.

Daniel Principe Guest Speaker

Students from Year 9 to 12 were fortunate to hear from youth advocate and educator Daniel Principe this week, who spoke about what it means to lead lives marked by integrity, compassion and empathy. Working extensively in Catholic schools and associations across Australia, he is known for his engaging seminars promoting healthy values among young people – particularly in the areas of respectful relationships, social media, identity and media literacy. Daniel facilitated engaging and age-appropriate sessions exploring key ideas contributing to the holistic development of virtuous, upstanding humans navigating contemporary contexts.

Bene Aged Care Visit

Our visit to Bene Aged Care on Wednesday was aimed at connecting with the older generation and learning about their past. We spent the day talking to the residents, hearing their stories and playing traditional Italian card games like Scopa and Briscola. It was a special experience that helped bridge the gap between generations in a really meaningful way.

While walking through the front doors, on one of the walls sat a picture of my Nonno. he had told me about this photo many times, but I had never had the chance to see it until now. My Nonno has been involved with the Italian community for many years, and his mum used to be a resident at Bene. After talking to my Nonno about it, he recalls Bene asking him to provide a photo from his childhood as a way of recognising individuals who’ve helped shape the community’s identity and values.

Seeing my Nonno’s photo displayed made me feel really proud. It was one of those moments that reminded me how much of an impact he’s had, not just in our family, but in the wider community too. It made the visit feel even more personal and meaningful, and gave me a deeper appreciation for the history and connections that places like Bene hold.

Brainstorm Productions

Today, students in Years 5 to 9 engaged in theatre performances from Brainstorm Productions. Middle Years saw the show ‘The Flipside’, which addressed bullying, harassment and aggression at school, at home and online. Two energetic performers explored the influence of peers, family, social media, YouTube and video games on attitudes and behaviour.

This award-winning show shines a light on issues such as cyberbullying, image-based abuse and coercive control. It provides students with practical strategies for emotional regulation, assertiveness, conflict resolution, resilience, help-seeking and breaking the cycle of violence. The performance also highlights the importance of positive role models and providing space for all students to express their feelings in healthy and authentic ways.

Years 5 and 6 students saw the ‘Being Brave’ show which gave them positive strategies to cope with emotions and adapt to change at school, at home and online.

Agriculture SEMEX Guest Speaker

Last Friday, the Year 10 Agriculture class had the privilege of hearing from Vaughn Johnston of SEMEX (agricultural semen exporters), who delivered a highly engaging presentation on cattle genetics. Vaughn shared his expertise on a wide range of topics, including key traits for cattle reproduction such as fertility, health and longevity, as well as breeding values and advanced reproductive technologies. Vaughn also spoke about potential career opportunities in the dairy industry and brought along an insulated liquid nitrogen tank to demonstrate how genetic samples are safely stored at ultra-cold temperatures. The presentation was a great way to wrap up the class’s study of the dairy industry.

From the Rostrevor Café

Parents and caregivers of students with food allergies have a new way of ordering food from the Rostrevor Café to mitigate the risk of allergen cross-contamination. A separate online ordering option is available for students with allergies on the Flexischools app.

If your child has a food allergy, please use ONLY the designated Allergy Service options when placing orders for any food or drink item. This option allows you order from the same menu as the standard option, but your child’s allergy will be printed on yellow labels to help staff easily identify and manage allergy-specific meals with extra care. Parents of children without allergies should continue to use the standard ordering options. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us keep all students safe.

A team of dedicated Rostrevor students braved the elements and proudly represented the College at the Cross-Country State Championships held at Oakbank Racecourse last week. The event brought together top runners from across the state, and our students demonstrated outstanding determination, sportsmanship and school spirit throughout the day.
