Unfair Day
Unfair Day was started at Rostrevor by the Christian Brothers in 1988 as a way of fundraising for those on the margins – people for whom life can be unfair.
Today, students heard from representatives from their House's chosen charities before enjoying a range of food stalls and challenges. Thank you to the Prefects who facilitated exciting activities for the Reception to Year 4 students. Funds raised from today’s activities will be distributed among the Houses' chosen charities: the Hutt Street Centre, St Vincent De Paul, Centacare, Catholic Mission, Catherine House and Caritas.
Year 9 Rite Journey Abyss Camp
Last week, the Year 9 cohort took part in the 'Abyss' component of their Rite Journey, embarking on a three-day, two-night camp. They were involved in a number of activities across two different environments. Mountain biking, orienteering and team building activities were held at Para Wirra Conservation Park, with this part of the camp seeing the boys cooking their dinner on Trangia stoves. They also spent time bushwalking in Mount Crawford Forest before taking part in their solo experience, which saw them taking time for quiet individual reflection and sleeping in their own tents. Thank you to all the staff who facilitated this wonderful formative experience for the cohort, as well as families for their assistance in preparing the boys for the trip.
Prefect Camp
The 2026 Prefect group attended camp at the Monastery this week, where they were provided with an invaluable opportunity for growth both authentically as individuals and collectively as a team. Across the program, they engaged in workshops designed to strengthen organisation and communication skills, while also exploring what it means to lead with integrity and purpose.
A highlight of the camp was hearing from current Head and Deputy Prefects Alecs and James, who shared their experiences and insights into leadership, offering both guidance and encouragement for the year ahead. Students also took on the Adventure Room challenge, testing their problem-solving and teamwork in a dynamic and engaging environment.
The camp concluded with a series of leadership think tanks and formal meetings, where the group collaborated to generate fresh initiatives that will shape their contribution to the College community in Term 4 and through 2026.
Italian Excursion
On Tuesday this week, the Year 10 and 11 Italian language students had the opportunity to deepen their appreciation for the contribution of migrants, visiting the Migrant monument in McLaren Vale. It is a powerful tribute to the many migrant families who shaped the region into the vibrant community, with the inclusion of wine and olive industries into local agriculture and in contributing to the region’s identity.
The cultural journey continued at the Santopalato Cooking School in Aldinga, where students swapped history books for aprons. Under the expert guidance of Chef Pino, they were introduced to Sicilian street food and the art of traditional Italian pasta making. This included making ravioli, fettucine, gnocchi, fusilli, farfalle and strozzapreti, and finally tasting fettucine napoletana. Students indulged in savoury brioche pizza and Italian-style hotdogs, finishing the meal with freshly made ricotta-filled cannoli. It was a celebration of heritage, history and the joy of sharing food together.
Junior Years Learn with Bricks Incursion
In connection with Science and Design and Technologies units, students in Reception, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 4 engaged in a workshop from Learn with Bricks last week. They worked in pairs following instructions to construct a robot. Basic elements of coding and using an iPad were introduced to control the direction of the robot as well as to pull and push a load.
From the Agriculture Farm
The Stage 2 Agriculture class attended an Agricultural Careers Expo at Urrbrae Agricultural High School on Thursday afternoon, where they were able to find out about potential career and study pathways in the agriculture, animal and vet sciences industries. The students networked, asked questions and learned from the stall holders about possible career decisions.
The results from the Royal Adelaide Show’s poultry competition have also been determined, with Rostrevor College finishing tenth overall out of all schools that entered. This was a three-part competition, with two teams of three pullets judged on their health, maturity and uniformity, posters created by students in the Year 9 Agriculture class which outlined the process of rearing the pullets, and the quality of the eggs laid by the chooks over the course of the show week.
OzHarvest Volunteering
Two Year 12 students travelled to Hindmarsh on Monday to volunteer for the Cooking for a Cause program which supports OzHarvest. Will Farmer and Tyree Williams joined students from other schools to help prepare delicious and healthy meals for people in need, using ingredients and produce which would otherwise be wasted. The boys cooked over 200 meals for the vulnerable in our community.
Year 6 Smiley Face Cookies
The Year 6 classes made smiley face cookies on Thursday for charities who distribute food to families and individuals experiencing homelessness in Adelaide. This was part of their Service Learning for the term, and it was a fantastic success!
The students were fully engaged and worked together to decorate the cookies with bright smiles and colours. They also did a terrific job bringing in donations of biscuits, lollies, icing, plates and bags, which made the activity possible. A big thank you to the generous families who supported this project. The students should be very proud of their efforts in helping to bring joy to others in our community.
