Blue Week
Blue Week is a time where students are given the space and resources to pause to reflect on their own wellbeing and take time to check in with those around them, remembering that mental health struggles can affect anyone. On Monday, students heard from guest speakers about the importance of Blue Week’s message, with a strong focus on men’s mental health, including depression and anxiety.
The Prefect-led blue doughnuts, netball match against Loreto College, charity BBQ, guest speakers, Year 12 'grounding' exercise and wearing a touch of blue initiatives this week were all aimed at creating positive change in the way Rostrevor's Middle and Senior Years students approach the topic of mental health, encouraging them to have important conversations with others and reducing the stigma attached to asking for help.
Funds raised from Blue Week activities will be donated to Beyond Blue and The Big Al Foundation.
Book Week
This week has been filled with fantastical journeys and perilous quests in the Junior Years, with theme for the 80th annual Children’s Book Week being ‘Book an Adventure’. Rostrevor’s youngest learners participated in a range of activities and events across the week, all aimed at encouraging a lifelong love of literacy. On Tuesday they were visited by author and illustrator Andrew Joiner who demonstrated how to draw the brown bear from his picture book, and on Thursday they helped to guide the story told by the Story Snorts Production company, who acted out a tale of aliens on the moon looking to take over the MCG – all suggestions from the audience!
Today was undoubtably the highlight, as Reception to Year 6 classes gathered in Purton Hall to show off their imaginative book-inspired costumes at the Book Week Parade!
Year 10 Active Citizenship Event
On Tuesday, our top-performing Year 10 Humanities students from Semester 1 attended the State’s first Active Citizenship Convention at Adelaide Oval, hosted by the Premier. Through listening to speakers such as Young Australian of the Year Amber Brock-Fabel, interacting with young leaders from other schools, lunching with legends and engaging with ‘Dem Mob’, the students developed their capacity to engage meaningfully with democracy and be active and informed citizens.
“I enjoyed how it gave plenty of young people the opportunity to share their worries and concerns about what's happening in Australian Society. I resonated with the message that even though we cannot vote, we can still dictate the future of the country so long as we care. There were great messages on what it means to participate in Australia's democracy and I learned many things about our government system during the excursion.”—Owen Tallis
“The Civics and Citizenship Convention was an amazing experience for all of us. We had the opportunity to hear from inspiring figures such as Premier Peter Malinauskas, news presenter Tony Armstrong, and athlete Tom Jonas. Throughout the day, we collaborated with students from both metropolitan and regional schools across South Australia to discuss the challenges facing our society and explored solutions through activities like mock voting systems and censuses, simulating the processes of democracy. The convention was a large success, and I left with a deeper understanding of what it means to be an active leader and engaged citizen.”—Spencer De Lacy
