NAIDOC Week Art in the Junior Years

Rostrevor’s youngest learners celebrated NAIDOC Week today with a visit from Year 1 student Thanasi Sianis’s mother and grandmother, Simone Reilly and Auntie Michelle, who taught the Reception and Year 1 students about Aboriginal art. Auntie Michelle discussed where her family comes from on a map of First Nations regions and explained the different art styles used by different groups, including how Aboriginal artists use symbols to tell stories in their work.

The students were keen to put their new knowledge to use, telling their own stories on canvases using a combination of symbols and dot work. Thank you to Simone and Auntie Michelle for coming to Rostrevor to share their knowledge, stories and culture with our Junior Years students.

Year 9 Rite Journey BBQ Breakfast

On Wednesday morning, the Year 9 cohort had an end of semester BBQ breakfast cooked by the Prefect group. It was an opportunity to reflect on what has taken place over the course of this semester and to showcase their progress in Term 2’s challenge of juggling, a skill which every student has been learning for the past nine weeks. Congratulations to Levi Ghedina and Felix Botha who were crowned the ‘Juggling Champions’.

We are looking forward to Term 3 which will see the Year 9s spend time at a Mentor Morning as well as engaging with some of our sister schools before embarking on the Rite Journey camp in Week 8. A huge thank you to The Rite Journey teachers as well as all the Year 9 students for their engagement in this highly important wellbeing program.

Life Education Visit

Life Education is Australia’s largest preventive health organisation empowering children to make safer and healthier choices so they can live happier lives. This week, they visited Rostrevor’s youngest learners to deliver a unique learning experience aimed at giving them the skills needed to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing. Students across Reception to Year 4 heard from Healthy Harold about topics including friendships, respectful relationships, digital safety and emotional wellbeing in Life Education’s inflatable classroom set up in Purton Hall.

Year 5 Morialta Excursion

As a part of the Year 5 Science curriculum, the cohort ventured to Morialta Conservation Park to see weathering, erosion and deposition in action at First Falls and Giant’s Cave today. It was fun and educational experience for all, and a fantastic way to finish off Term 2.

Vinnies Winter Appeal

A big thank you to all the families who donated goods to the Vinnies Winter Appeal through the collection baskets around the College. Your generosity and kindness will go a long way in supporting those who need it the most this winter.

Year 6 Ice Cream Making

This term, the Year 6 students explored food hygiene in their Technology lessons and learned about states of matter in Science. To bring both topics together, they created their own ice cream, each adding a unique flavour twist to the mixture. Assistant Principal – Junior Years, Siobhan Paley had the enjoyable task of taste-testing every creation and appreciated the variety and effort. The students enjoyed collaborating and applying their classroom knowledge in such a fun and hands-on way.

Year 7 Solar-powered Cars

In the Year 7 Design Technology unit, students have been engage in a practical project to build a car powered by two energy sources: solar and chemical. Throughout this unit, they are introduced to workshop safety procedures and develop hands-on skills such as soldering, cutting materials, assembling components and using glue guns safely. Students also gain a deeper understanding of how electricity is generated, how it is used and the importance of using it safely. The highlight of this unit was getting to take their finished cars outside under the sun to race their solar-powered contraptions against their peers.

CO-CURRICULAR NEWS

Year 9/10 Knockout Soccer

Rostrevor's Year 9/10 Knockout Soccer team had an impressive outing yesterday, playing two matches throughout the day. The day began with a dominant performance against Golden Grove, securing a convincing 11–1 victory. The boys displayed great teamwork and attacking flair throughout the match.

The second game against Underdale High proved to be the spectacle of the day. With both sides well-structured and competitive, the match was tightly contested from start to finish. Despite several chances on both ends, the game remained goalless and was decided by penalties, where Rostrevor held their nerve to win 6–5 in the shootout.

Both matches were played in great spirit, with excellent sportsmanship shown by all teams involved. It was a memorable and successful day for the team, who now progress to the next round to be played early next term.

Year 7/8 Knockout Soccer

On Wednesday this week, our Year 7/8 Knockout Soccer team travelled to Thomas More College to compete in the first round of their Knockout competition. The team put on an impressive performance in their opening match, defeating the host school, Thomas More College, with a solid 4-2 victory. Their momentum continued into the second game where they secured a dominant 5-0 win against Trinity College. As a result of these outstanding efforts, Rostrevor College has now progressed to the next round of the competition.

Year 7/8 Knockout Basketball

Well done to the Year 7/8 Knockout Basketball team who finished fourth yesterday in the finals.

Comprised of mostly Year 7s, the team battled well against some much taller opponents.

A big thank you to Year 12 student and current First V Vice Captain Noah Sampson who served as assistant coach to the team.

Second XI v Gleeson College

Rostrevor's Second XI Soccer team had the exciting opportunity to play on home turf for the first time this season on Wednesday, facing an in-form Gleeson College side. With both teams pushing for a finals top-four finish, the stakes were high. Rostrevor put on a dominant display from the beginning, finding the back of the net twice in the opening 10 minutes. By half-time, they had surged to a commanding 5–0 lead.

Gleeson came out fighting in the second half and managed to score twice, but the Second XI stayed composed, disrupted momentum, and sealed a well-deserved 6–2 victory. The result sees the team move into fourth place overall, putting finals well within reach!

Emerging Socceroos Championship Selection

A second Rostrevor College student has been selected to compete at the Emerging Socceroos Championships which will take place at the Home of the Matildas in Melbourne this July. Congratulations to Year 10 student Alex Ascensio who will join Ryder Dalton at the tournament!

The tournament gathers the top Under 15 and Under 16 male footballers from across the country, showcasing their skills to national team technical staff. As part of Football Australia’s talent identification pathway, the Championships play an important role in player development, with many current Subway Socceroos beginning their journey at this tournament. Good luck, Alex!
