Principal’s News - 24 November 2023

This weekend sees the last weekend of Rostrevor’s co-curricular matches for 2023 and I thank and acknowledge the work of our Co-Curricular team, Luke Manuel, Tim Baccanello and Sarah Catterwell for their efforts in 2023. We also thank all our teachers and many volunteers who have supported the program and especially acknowledge all Rostrevor students for their commitment and involvement in co-curricular activities this year.

Our Year 10s and 11s have now headed off to begin SwotVac before their end of year exams. I would like to wish them the best of luck as they complete final assessments and exams next week.

Years 8-12 2024 Transition Day

Students joining Rostrevor in Years 8-12 next year came to their transition day on Monday, alongside some joining in Year 7 who were unable to attend last week’s Transition Day. Those joining as boarders stayed overnight at Duggan House to get a sense of their new home away from home, and to meet their new neighbors. I would like to extend a warm welcome to these students and their families and can’t wait to see them in their new uniforms at the 2024 Opening Ceremony!

Little Rossi Learners Final Visit

Today was the final Little Rossi Learners visit for 2023. Next year’s Reception Students have been visiting Rostrevor over the past few weeks for their Little Rossi Learners sessions, preparing them for life as a student in 2024. Today, the boys spent time playing with their friends in their classroom and outside with the big Junior Years kids at recess before making self portraits and posing for a class photo. We look forward to welcoming them as Reception students in 2024!

Year 10 Loreto and Rostrevor BBQ and Quiz Night

On Wednesday evening, Year 10 Loreto College students joined their counterparts from Rostrevor at the Pavilion for a social BBQ and quiz night. It was a fun night of healthy competition and forming new friendships. Thank you to next year’s Prefect groups from both schools for cooking the BBQ.

Gurr and Webb House 10-Year Anniversaries

Last week, Middle and Senior Years students in Gurr and Webb gathered at the Kelty to hear the history of their relatively new Houses, having been established ten years ago this year. Thank you to Paul Deegan and Glen Malkin who spoke to students about the Houses, both having been present at their launch. Gurr and Webb students were then treated to a sausage sizzle to celebrate.

Mid-Year Reception Cultural Awareness Learning

The Mid-Year Reception students have continued building their cultural competence by welcoming more special guests into the classroom over the last few weeks. Tanja (Alexander Gustafsson’s mum) shared a Swedish family recipe for gingerbread that has been passed down through many generations. The Mid-Year Receptions carefully decorated the gingerbread and thoroughly enjoyed eating it together! Ellie (Noah Carroll’s mum) brought in hard-boiled eggs to teach the boys about Greek Easter. They learnt that the ‘strongest egg’ won’t crack when tapped on top and bottom with another egg. The boys each painted their own egg and had a lot of fun cracking them afterwards. Thank you to Tanja and Ellie for sharing their families’ special traditions and celebrations.

St Vincent de Paul Christmas Hampers

Over the coming weeks we are asking families to donate items that will be used to create Christmas Hampers for St Vincent De Paul, to help those in need this Christmas season. Baskets can be found in classrooms and PCs for students to place their donations, which will be collected on Tuesday 5 December. Primary students are invited to donate any items. Middle Years students are invited to donate specific items according to the list of ideas in the letter sent to families which can be viewed HERE

CO-CURRICULAR NEWS

First XI Cricket v Westminster School

Our First XI Cricket team took on Westminster School in the Division 1 Pool B competition on Saturday. Westminster won the toss and sent Rostrevor to field first for the first time this season. Balyn O'Brien was the choice of our bowlers, taking 3/45 off 9 before Westminster set a healthy 224 runs to chase. The run chase started with two quick wickets, but it did not phase opening batsman, Noah Mathews, who made a run a ball for 50. A big partnership from Archah Parisi and Alecs Zorzi steered us to victory, both making 57 and 72 respectively. After the first round of fixtures, our First XI remains undefeated!

Touch Football

Well done to the undefeated Middle Years Touch Football team for their win over Marryatville High School in their final game for 2023 on Wednesday! Touch Football has gone from strength to strength at Rostrevor this year after our first ever team was formed last year. We look forward to the program growing in numbers again in 2024!
