Debating and Chess

State Debating Champions

Rostrevor College holds the current State Title for Senior Secondary School debating, having defeated St Peter's Girls' College in an emphatic 5 - 0 decision in the 2019 Grand Final.

Congratulations go to Christy Saji, Garang Kuach and Liam D'Silva and their coaches, Director of Teaching & Learning Kerry Hodginson and teachers Tom Hodkinson and Maria De Ieso.

A total of 64 schools took part in this year's Debating SA Schools' Competition, across 272 teams, including 25 in the senior debating fixture. The Rostrevor senior debating team has competed in the State final on three previous occassions. To read how one student came from obscurity to State debating champion, click here


Chess

Rostrevor College is fortunate to have one of Australia's leading Chess coaches teaching our Junior Year students.David Koetsier has been a chess coach for more than 20 years and has competed in tournaments around the world. David coached the Australian Team for the World Youth Championships in 2016 and brings a great depth of Chess knowledge and enthusiasm to our College.

Chess at Rostrevor not only provides a great social and competitive opportunity, but helps our students develop forward, creative and logical thinking as well as enhancing mathematical skills.
