Principal’s News - 11 August 2023

Even though we are still very much in 2023, Term 3 is also a time when we begin planning and preparing for 2024. We are currently in the midst of 2024 teacher recruitment, student subject selections and finalising enrolments. While we are close to capacity at many year levels, we have a small number of vacancies across the College - if you or anyone you know is looking to secure enrolment for 2024, you are encouraged to contact Annemarie Mein, College Registrar, as soon as possible.

We are looking forward to some big events in the coming weeks, with Intercol in Week 5 and the Centenary Gala on 2 September. If you haven’t had the opportunity to purchase your tickets to the Gala as yet, you only have a few weeks to go before ticket sales close! If you have any questions about table allocations or ticket purchases, please get in contact with our Development Office

Blue Week

This week, our Prefects hosted Blue Week to help raise awareness of men’s mental health, including depression and anxiety. The week’s activities aimed to create positive change in the way students approach the topic of mental health, encouraging them to check in with others and reducing the stigma attached to asking for help.

Students were treated to a BBQ on Monday, with blue wrist bands and shoelaces being sold in the Valley from Monday to Thursday. Blue ribbons tied to trees around campus served as a reminder of the week’s purpose. The Middle Years and Senior Years Bloke’s Chats at lunchtime provided a space for students to initiate conversations, and the affirmation activity this morning was a meaningful way for students to write positive messages to their classmates. The highlight of the week was at lunchtime today, when our Prefects won their friendly netball match against the Loreto Student Executive! All funds raised from Blue Week activities will be sent to Beyond Blue.

Charter Ambassador Program

Our four students involved in the Charter Ambassador Program and Mr Evan Pezos this week received official invitations to attend a reception, hosted by Her Excellency the Honorable Frances Adamson AC Governor of SA for the Child Development Council’s Charter Ambassadors at Government House this September.

As Charter Ambassadors, these students have had the opportunity to say what the young people of South Australia need to be safe, happy and well, influence change and learn new skills. By working collaboratively with peers from across the state as well as with members of government, they, along with past Rostrevor Ambassadors have been instrumental in helping guide policy direction. These students are also representing the College at the Child Development Council, Health & Wellbeing Summit at the Adelaide Zoo next week.

Adelaide Symphony Orchestra Excursion

Under the baton of Maestro Luke Dollman, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra took Elder Hall at the University of Adelaide on a melodic journey through Copland's and Schubert's musical works on Wednesday. Rostrevor’s Senior music students enjoyed a unique opportunity to witness musical mastery up close, gaining valuable insights into the art of orchestral performance. This experience enriched their musical understanding and served as a source of inspiration, with some students visiting the University of Adelaide for the first time.

Stage 2 Outdoor Education Expedition

Hear from Year 12 boarding student, Darci Best on the recent Stage 2 Outdoor Education trip:

For Our Stage 2 Self-reliant camp, our class travelled down to Renmark, where we were able to take advantage of the riverways. The goal for the trip was to be as independent as possible, by organising and completing the trip without teachers’ help. The days were mostly spent kayaking along the planned route, and nights consisted of camping and cooking on the riverbank. The overall experience helped build connections within the group and our knowledge of the outdoors, and was a memorable camping trip.

Congratulations to all our students who travelled to Balaklava on Friday last week to perform at the annual Eisteddfod. Read Head of Arts Faculty Peter Waterman’s recount of the event below.
