Principal’s News - 12 April 2024

How time flies! Term 1 has been filled with new beginnings, new experiences and new friendships. For the Year 12s, this has also been a time of ‘lasts’. Their last Opening Ceremony, their last summer co-curricular games, their last swimming carnival and their last retreat as they enter into their final year of school.

I wish you all a safe and happy two-week break before we reconvene for Term 2 on Tuesday 30 April. I look forward to Rostrevor's learners returning rested and ready to embark on the next stage of their education journeys in their winter uniforms.

Year 12 Retreat

Our Year 12s journeyed to Belair and Victor Harbor on Monday for their retreat. The boys spent three days guided by staff reflecting on how they can live authentically. There was time for introspection and contemplation, and they were challenged to set goals for their remaining time at school and to be grateful for those who have and continue to support and believe in them.

Retreats are a key formation experience in the life of our students. Having this time away from our usual surroundings helps us to engage with the search for truth and come to know more deeply our authentic self and that we are loved by God.

Rostrevor and Loreto Jazz Concert

In a display of talent and unity, Rostrevor College and Loreto College recently joined forces for a captivating musical performance. Preparation for the prestigious Generations in Jazz event was the driving force behind this collaborative effort. Rostrevor's Senior Band, Senior Jazz Ensemble, and Small Jazz Ensemble, alongside Loreto's own exceptional choirs and musicians, delivered stellar performances that resonated with passion and skill.

This unforgettable musical extravaganza serves as a testament to the talent and dedication present within both Rostrevor and Loreto's music programs, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of attending.

Year 9 Day Eggs Agriculture Excursion

On Wednesday, both Year 9 Agriculture classes travelled up to Days Eggs farm at Lower Light for an excursion. They learned about and observed different chicken housing systems, technology use on an egg farm, the importance of biosecurity, plenty about the egg industry as well as examples of employment opportunities within the agricultural industry. The excursion complemented the Poultry Production unit recently covered in class which saw students rear baby chickens to egg laying age.

Year 7 Probability Activity

As part of the Probability topic in Maths, Year 7s have been making games involving chance to reinforce their understanding of the core concepts. They tested their games before engaging students from across the Junior and Middle Years to participate yesterday. There have been a variety of games constructed, from carnival-like games to original computer games. It was a fun way for the boys to finish the term, test their entrepreneurial and collaboration skills and consume some sugar!

SACE Exam Timetable

CO-CURRICULAR NEWS

EREA Queensland Soccer Tour

Students on the EREA Queensland Soccer tour arrived safe and sound on Tuesday this week and have been having a blast competing against their peers from fellow Edmund Rice schools from across Australia. Keep an eye out for a detailed report about their trip and match results in the Principal’s News next term.

School Sports SA Athletics Championships

On Friday last week the College Athletics team travelled to the SA Athletics Stadium in Mile End to compete in the School Sports SA Athletics (track and field) Secondary Championships. Competing in A Grade, the competition was fierce. The boys gave it their all and finished in 7th place overall. Notable performances were achieved by Spencer De Lacy, who recorded ‘Standards’ in each of his individual events alongside three gold medals. Additionally, Thomas Griffiths, Akot Deng Yel, Jaylen Williams, Archie Dalton and Archie Craig all achieved first places. A special mention must go to Luka Marzullo who filled in for the 2km steeplechase at the last minute, and despite having never competed in this came second by only 2 seconds - well done! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all coaches for their assistance with the team this season. We now look toward the Achilles Cup in Term 3.

U15 South Australian Cricket Team Selection

Congratulations to First XI cricketers Archie Shaw, Archah Parisi and Jarrah Reidy who were all selected for the Under 15s South Australian Cricket Squad this week! The boys will travel to Queensland later this year to represent SA at the National Championships.

Under 18 South Australian Football Team Selection

Congratulations to Jacob Newton and Noah Daw who were announced in the U18 South Australian Football team lineup this week! Both Norwood FC players, they were scouted during the league's preseason, proving themselves worthy of being amongst the 38 players selected from across the state. They will train three nights a week until their first game on 26 May against the Allies at Thebarton Oval.

SAPSASA Swimming Medalist

Well done to Year 4 student Matthew Galipo who placed third in backstroke and second in freestyle in his age group at the Swimming SAPSASA State Championships on Tuesday. He achieved new personal best times for each race, taking three seconds off his backstroke time from the recent Catholic Schools swimming carnival! Matthew was offered a place in his age group’s South Australian Swimming Team.
